John Slangen (Kerkrade 1951) studied Theory of Music and Composition at the Maastricht Academy of Music, both subjects with Matty Niƫl. After his theory training, he was appointed as a teacher of theoretical subjects (Harmony, Counterpoint and Analysis) at the Maastricht Academy of Music. In 1980 he won the Prize for Composition. Since 1989 he has worked as a main subject teacher of Composition and since 1990 as a main subject teacher of Music Theory. Since 2003, in addition to being a main subject teacher, he has been a staff member (Head of Classical Music) at the Conservatory. He was member in many working groups, advisory boards and boards. Up to now, Slangen has composed more than one hundred and fifty works, solo pieces, chamber music, works for orchestra, cantatas and two (chamber) operas.
